Shauna looked up from her dishes and saw that Lee Chan had just come in through the back of the house. He was out of breath and pointing down the road.

"Someone is coming," he cried.

Drying her hands on her apron, Shauna hurried over to the window. The rider looked awkward on a horse, as if he seldom did any riding. Once he reached the yard she recognized the man.

"It's the telegrapher from town. I wonder what he's doing out here?"

"Want me to find out?" Lee said.

"No. I'll speak to him. You stay out of sight. No need telling the world where you're at."

Lee remained in the kitchen while she went out onto the porch to greet the horseman. She held up her hand to shield the sun from her eyes, and smiled a greeting.

"Ben? What brings you way out here?"

"Something special," the old man said. "Lassito asked me to bring out a wire fer him. McLane seemed to think you could get it to him the quickest."

"McLane?" She was surprised.

"Him and Lassito must be kind of chummy."

Shauna stepped down from the porch, saving the man the trouble of getting down from his horse.

"Mr. Lassito has been taking some of his meals here. I'd be happy to pass along any message next time I see him."

Ben pulled a sealed envelope from his shirt and handed it to Shauna. He watched her tuck the note into her apron and grinned.

"I'd sure like to see that man open his telegram. It's from the President of these United States."

"What? President Grant?"

"It's a fact." Ben grinned. "I gave a second telegram to the marshal. McLane couldn't have looked more dumbfounded if he'd just learned that he was about to have a baby."

"I don't understand. What's it all about?"

The man chuckled, happy that he'd aroused her cu riosity. "I'm not a talking man, Mrs. Dupree. You see that Lassito gets his letter. I reckon he'll tell you all about it then."

Shauna would have tried to worm some information out of Ben, but he tipped his hat and turned his old plug for town. He seemed as pleased as a coon in an unguarded field of corn.

Returning to the house, she didn't even tell Lee Chan what the visit had been about. She went directly to Lassito's room. She didn't care if she had to sit at his side all day and night. She wanted to be there when he awoke. Whatever the President had told him, she wanted to know it immediately!
